28th July 2010

Hello everyone. Those of you that are regular visitors to this site may be wondering what we've been up to the last few months?

Well we're now in the middle of a pretty warm Summer.
If you have noticed the tiny ad for the other businessthecoolboxhirecompany.co.uk on the 'SG Loves' page, you will know that we have been busy carting boxes all over London for some fabulous parties and outdoor events. That's not to say that cake decorating has taken a back seat, Oh no! there are some radical new plans in the pipeline which we hope will include a small event of our own, possibly in September/October to promote our new 'Salon Glacé  CakeDecorating  Parties', where we will be bringing fabulous cake decorating to you! If you would like to join our mailing list to be kept up to date with events, then just email us with your name and we will let you know how things are progressing.

Congratulations Lucy!!

The gorgeous pictures on this site are the work of my 22 year old daughter Lucy Satchell, who has just completed her BA in Photography. She was awarded a 2:1 and it goes without saying that we are all very proud of her achievement.

The images on this sight have been admired by many, but they are not Lucy's passion. She specialises in landscape photography, her images are a complete contrast to any of those shown on this website.

Finally
A small business is now showing up on the web next to ours, trading under the name of 'Glacé,' it is based in London SE23. Please be aware that it is completely unrelated to 'Salon Glacé of London N13.

          CAKE DECORATING SUPPLIES/GLOSSARY

We have lost track of the number of times that we have been contacted by customers in a state of sheer panic, because they have promised to make a cake for a friend or relative and have forgotten or left it too late to get a vital item, such as the cake board.

Because of this we are in the process of compiling a Glossary/Directory of Basic- (Not Specialist) Cake Decorating Supplies such as boards, colours and icings which can be found on most local high streets. Find out more Cake Decorating Directory/Glossary
Of course if you are the super efficient organised type you will find all manner of cake decorating paraphernalia- including all specialist products by visiting our Suppliers page.

                           Really....No Excuse!

Like we said fabulous cakes only please and if you want to add a personal greeting or message make that stand out too.
As you may have noticed 'we don't do piping'- it doesn't post well, but that needn't deter you from personalising your own cake.
Do what we've done, pick a gorgeous font and make up your own message using your computer, then get it printed on to an icing sheet.
A good tip if you're an habitual cake maker, is to print various greetings /messages on the one sheet of A4 sized paper, make sure they're not too small you want them to show. That way you save money by only getting one sheet printed and you've got them to hand when you need them.

We have been told that Tesco do something similar, so if you're not too fussed obout colours or fonts then that's a good way to go.

Mum Doesn’t Do Fairy Cakes!

I read a couple of articles in The Sunday Times recently. The first one related to the current backlash against cupcakes or as we used to know them ‘fairy cakes’ and the other one was about one man’s obsessive quest to cook the perfect omelette.

Now as we all know that one of the first things a Mother teaches her child to cook is fairy cakes. But, what if your Mum’s Spanish and has other ideas?

The first thing that Mum taught us kids to make was a ‘Tortilla Francesa’ otherwise known as a plain omelette. By the time we were ten years old, we were experts with a frying pan and had acquired the dexterous skills of the most seasoned professionals.
Of course these were not the ‘perfect omelettes’ that remain the ‘holy grail’ of French cuisine, no, ‘baveuse’ was out of the question.
Our ‘tortilla Francesa’ was destined to be eaten between two slices of white bread, with a scraping of Salad Cream for added flavour; mayonnaise would have been better, but was as yet unavailable readymade.

A regular in our school lunch bags, our tortilla sandwiches never failed to provoke a chorus of "eugh’s" from the other children, whose lunch consisted mainly of plain cheese or ham sandwiches, a packet of Smith’s crisps and an apple. But, we didn’t care, we were used to it and  anyway, we would be going home to one of Mum's delicious home made meals, while they appeared to have the same thing every night-Tea?

So next time your child asks if they can make fairy cakes, teach them how to make an omelette instead. They’re cheap, nutritious if cooked in the merest whisper of olive oil, they’re quicker than Macdonald’s and make a great base for all manner of ingredients – they’ll never starve!

So what else did my Mother teach me?
