Colour & Inspiration

With so many mouth-watering colours to choose from nowadays, its not surprising that some of us want to use them all at once. The thing to remember, as with most things in life is that 'less is more'.

The words of an old college Lecturer still ring in my ears, "No more than three colours"  The Mantra remained the same whether we were producing decorative pieces finished in aspic or cake decoration. Advice that has proved invaluable, three colours.....(plus a little gold), this is Salon Glacé after all.

"Let them eat cake"

Over the years we have amassed a great many ribbons in some fabulous colours. Much of our inspiration for colour co-ordination takes it's cue from these ribbons, they are often a good starting point for a design. For example our 'Marie Antoinette' Cake Decoration was inspired by two ribbons, peach and blue.
The colours worked well together, so we decided to design something around this combination.

We used an 'Orchard' cutter (P2) to create the base of the design. This particular cutter has quite a 'French' feel to it. Then we painted the edge of the decoration in one of our favourite Sugarflair colour's 'Antique Gold'. Suddenly we were looking at something that said  'The Palace of Versailles'. The earrings featuring our signature ' roses and swirls' evolved (out of an earlier more complicated sketch) during an afternoon spent 'just playing' with the icing, it was as simple as that!

A dear departed friend of mine was said to have owned a pair of earrings that belonged to the ill-fated queen, I never got to see them myself. They were stolen from her London home while she was on holiday in Spain. I'm guessing that something deep in the psyche also played its part in this design.

Interiors magazines are another great source of colour inspiration. Designers have a great eye for colour and are not afraid to use it in unusual and exciting combinations. Our gorgeous
'Zsa Zsa' Cake Decoration
was originally produced in shades of pink and pearl. The decision to recreate it in black and mint was as a direct result of having seen this colour combination used on an eye-catching silk lampshade pictured in a glossy
magazine.
