Make A pearl Necklace Cake Decoration

This pretty little 'Pearl necklace cake decoration' is really quick and easy to make.
The versatile design lends itself to any number of special celebrations from Bridal Showers to Wedding Anniversaries and Special Birthdays.

We have created ours in the classic pearl shade, using our favourite lustre dust 'Mother Of Pearl'
by Sugarflair. But you can interpret the design in any way you like, perhaps using alternative colours, creating a second row of pearls or making the plaque bigger to suit a larger celebration cake

We love using these edible pearls (left) in our
designs, they're so easy to make.

We know you can get lots of fabulous moulds to
help you make perfect pearls, but we're not
re-creating the 'Crown Jewels' here, just a simple little decoration. You will only need a few, so we
make them by hand using the method shown below, which personally is far more satisfying.

These Metallic Food Paints by 'Rainbow Dust' (below) are 100% edible and are available
in a fantastic range of colours.

To create a really vibrant necklace, make the pearls as in step 1) below and leave to dry.
Attach to your cake decoration as shown in step 8) and leave to dry again.
Finally give a couple of coats of metallic paint in your choice of colour.

Tip: Make the pearls using a similar colour sugarpaste to the paint you intend to use.
That way if you miss a couple of bits it won't show so much.
A word of warning you will need a steady hand!

Notes
Please read the notes relating to Sugarpaste, Lustre Dust, Edible Pearls, Sugar Glue  and Round Cutters, published on the Vintage Fan Cake Decoration page, before commencing
with this decoration.

If making this decoration using plain sugarpaste, instead of paste containing a gum additive,
omit stage 5)in the method shown below.
The paste will be too soft to make holes in and will be liable to tear.

Ingredients                                             Equipment
150grm Sugarpaste                                                                  Rolling pin
Sugar glue                                                                                   Plain round cutter approx 9.8cm
Edible lustre dust                                                                     Plain round cutter approx 7.8cm
Icing sugar/cornflour for dusting                                       Soft dusting brush
Ribbon                                                                                         Brush for glue
                                                                                                        Round ended tool (cake dowel)

1)

To make the pearls, first knead the
sugarpaste well. Then take  small pieces
of paste a little bigger than a garden pea
and roll between your palms until a
smooth round ball is achieved.
You will need about 15 for this size of plaque,  leave to dry.

3)

Lightly dust the work surface with the icing sugar/cornflour. Knead the paste well and roll out to approximately 4mm thickness. Cut out one round using the large 9.8cm plain cutter.

5)

If your sugarpaste contains CMC or similar
( see notes), continue as follows.
If not leave to dry and continue at stage 7) below.
Taking your rounded tool make
two holes 3cm apart as shown. You may
have to lift the paste carefully to push  the
holes right through the paste.

7)

Using the fine paint brush, moisten the inner circle with the sugar glue.

9)

When your decoration is completely dry,
thread the ribbon through carefully and gently tie into a bow. If your decoration does not have holes, moisten the gap left at the top of the decoration with the sugar glue and place a little piece of sugarpaste in the space. Moisten the sugarpaste with the sugar glue and rough up a little with the end of your paintbrush to create a bit of grip.
Carefully place your bow on top pressing very gently. leave to dry.

2)

Place about a quarter of a teaspoon of your chosen lustre dust into a small egg cup or cupcake case and add the dry pearls. Move them around with a soft brush until coated with the dust. Remove to a piece of paper kitchen towel and roll around to get rid of excess lustre.
Set aside for later.

4)

Taking the smaller 7.8cm cutter, place in
the centre of the round and press very
lightly, just enough to leave an impression.

6)

Leave on flat surface to dry completely.

8)

Important!
If you have made your plaque without the
holes remember to leave a space
at the top to stick on your ribbon.

Starting from the top and using the inner circle as your guide, stick on the smaller pearls. Halfway down change to the larger pearls and continue as shown above.
Leave to dry completely.
10)

Place decoration of top of your cake and finish cake with co-ordinating ribbon.

If you're handy with a piping bag, why not
pipe on a name or greeting. If not use small letter cutters to create a short name or use your computer to create a message using a pretty font. Have this printed onto icing- ensure that the message will fit the space inside the plaque.

Remember, you are not limited to this size, you can make this decoration bigger (cut round a saucer) to fit larger cakes- great for  Special Birthdays/Bridal Showers/Anniversaries
