We've got lots of pretty designs, including our latest three; 'Mum' (below), 'Mum's Dressing Table' and 'Parfum Glacé'. So the only difficult thing about creating a 'Mothers Day Cake'
finished with one of our stunning 'handmade cake decorations'  will be deciding which one to choose.

Finishing Touches

So, now that you've chosen your Salon Glacé Cake Decoration or maybe even decided to
have a go at making one yourself  (Vintage Fan Cake Decoration, all that's needed is a simple
finishing touch.

Ribbons/Trims

If you're just starting out in cake decorating or are lacking a little confidence in your cake decorating abilities, then I'm going to let you into a secret- ribbons!!

Never under-estimate the power of a beautiful ribbon. A gorgeous ribbon can transform a plain
iced cake into something truly spectacular in seconds!

There was a time when the choice of ribbons on offer in the UK was very limited.
But despite the huge range available today, they are still an extremely underused commodity
where cake decorating is concerned.

Of course this is Salon Glacé so we're not limiting ourselves to the good old
'Plain Satin Ribbon' longtime stalwart of the cake decorating world. No, we're talking,
Organza, Tafetta, Trimmings/braids and in particular the outstanding range of fabulous printed grosgrain ribbons, which are produced in every possible colour combination and pattern available.

Printed grosgrain ribbons have been popular in the United States for many years (manufactured in USA and China) where there is a huge ribbon culture. It is only in the last 4-5 years that they have been appearing in any significant quantities and designs on british websites.

If you have never investigated this area of
the ribbon world and why would you?
I urge you to get straight on to www.Ebay.com
I have been known to lose entire days of my life mesmerised by the sheer choice of printed
grosgrain ribbons available on this site.

There are so many fabulous feminine designs
that are perfect for 'Mothers Day'.
I can guarantee that like me, you are going to
want to buy them all.

Choose from colourful ribbons featuring, dots (see above), pastel stripes, flowers or fruits.
But why stop there, you can also find ribbons printed with handbags, lipsticks, shoes, Cats, dogs, cupcakes, macaroons (www.craftyribbons.com) (below right), leopard print or baroque designs,
to name but a few - the sky really is the limit!

Creating a really striking cake is easy.
First choose a printed ribbon to go round
your cake, (you won't need more than a metre).                              www.craftyribbons.com
Then make a sugarpaste decoration for the top of your cake using a cookie cutter in the same
motif and a co-ordinating colour eg. dog/bone
cookie cutters, printed dog ribbon (see below),
ribbons are also available with paw prints.
Minimal skill required!

For one of the largest ranges of cookie cutters visit.

These are some of my other favourite ribbon sites.

If you don't get round to checking out any of the other sites listed here, just look at this one. Outstanding collection of ribbons, especially 'fairytale ribbons'.
Just think of all the beautiful cakes you could make using these.

Mothers Day Gifts

Ask any mother what she would like for 'Mothers Day' and you would probably get the same
reply all over the world;  'just to spend the day in the company of my family'.

But what of an actual gift- if you had to choose something special for yourself what would it be?

My own mother would be overjoyed if her gift was 'a man and van' at her disposal for an entire week. She would get him to drive her round to every charity shop within a 50 mile radius of her
home. Taking in any car boot, table top and jumble sale that she happened to stumble across along
the way. But that is only half the story, she would then return to those very same car boot and table top sales to flog off all her booty for a tidy profit and ultimately distribute it all amongst her seven children...they do say 'Charity begins at home'!!

My mother-in-law whose inclinations are not quite as Romany, shall we say, would be happy with
a nice bouquet of flowers or even a bottle of Cinzano Bianco. She would make herself up a long
drink with lemonade, ice and a slice of lemon and sit happily sipping her vermouth while gazing
out at the boats in the Blackwater Estuary just outside her living room window- very nice.

So what about me, what would I like? Well the majority of my likes have been pretty much documented here in some form or another over the years. I love anything from my favourite shop 'Palmers Green Antiques' 482 Green Lanes, Palmers Green, London N13 5PA
TeL: 0208-350-0878

I have often referred to this place as "The gates to heaven". It is the tiniest of shops, but
crammed full of gorgeous things. You can pick up something fabulous here from as little as a fiver,
great for 'Mothers Day Gifts'

"These are a few of my favourite things"

"Handbags and Glad rags"

Most women would confess to having an obsession with either shoes or handbags.

Well actually I don't. Given the choice I would probably buy yet another gigantic
punchbowl that takes up half my kitchen!!

That's not to say I don't like bags, of course I do.
But they are nearly always bought for me rather than bought by me.

These two little bags (right) were gifts from my children.
I think they're both from 'Accessorize'.

Every now and again all four of us will go out somewhere and one of the bags will get an outing.

Somehow I always seem to end up carrying my husband's car keys, phone, loose change etc. Which is ok as they're small but roomy and very easy to carry... unlike a punchbowl!!

"Let them eat cake"

It's only natural that I would have an affinity with the french queen Marie Antoinette.

Sharing the same name means that I have probably heard the above quote more times
than most and then of course there is the cake connection itself.

Now, whether she actually said it or not, I'm sure that Marie Antoinette like myself,
would have indulged in the odd bit of cake when it took her fancy. No doubt, she would have
eaten it off a beautiful porcelain plate with gorgeous silver cutlery or maybe even
solid gold cutlery!!

I bought this lovely set of dainty cake knives
and forks (above right) part of a set of six, from 'Palmers Green Antiques'
(see above)

Although probably not quite up to the standard of those found at 'The Palace of Versailles' they are still very pretty and absolutely
essential for those indulgent Marie Antoinette moments.

Chocolate is the answer- who cares what the question is??
Definitely not for troughing in one sitting!

These delicious Pink Marc De Champagne Truffles by 'Charbonnél et Walker' (below)
must be savoured and appreciated just like a
fine wine (oh really!!).

In fact I have only just finished a similar box that I received last Christmas.

Luckily it is my birthday in a few days time....so hopefully, I may not have to wait quite as long as Mothers Day to enjoy my next box?

"Shall I compare thee to a Summer's day"

No list of my favourite things would be complete without a mention of my guilty pleasure;
'The Darling Buds Of May'.

Over the years I have had the videos, twice!
The box set of dvds, the books (below),
including the last one 'A little of what you fancy', which never made it to the small screen. The audio tapes, which meant my family had to also seek out a cassette recorder for me to play them on, a special 'Darling Buds Of May'
book (Ebay) and a selection of Ma Larkin type pinnys.
(Despite evidence to the contrary, I promise that I do not have a multiple personality disorder)

So what is it about this fabulous British rural romp that I love so much?

Nostalgia! a simpler way of life, similarities to
my own upbringing within a large family, constant celebrations, a love of food and of course, the odd cocktail!

"Diamonds are a girl's best friend"

Ok, so not quite diamonds in the conventional sense, but the next best thing.
Anything big and sparkly that I can wear round Sainsburys whilst channeling Elizabeth Taylor, gets my vote.

This gorgeous ring (left) was another gift from my two children. I can't remember what the
occasion was as they have bought me quite
a few.

They never last very long and the stones nearly always fall out. But they help to inject little moments of glamour into my daily routine.

                       Cinéma (Yves Saint Laurent)

My first ever grown up perfume was appropriately 'First' ( Van Cleef and Arpels).

It was bought for me by Odette Azagury, (mother of celebrated jeweller Solange Azagury-Partridge)and glamorous boss,
at the Bayswater hair salon where I worked
as a 17 year old stylist.

I remained loyal to that scent for a long time, occasionally wearing other fragrances such as 'Dune' or 'Giorgio' by way of a change.

A chance testing of a sample of  'Envy'
(Gucci) in a duty free shop while waiting for a flight to Spain some 15 years ago, saw the start
of a longstanding intimate relationship; I had found my signature scent.

Two Christmases ago my world fell apart, when my daughter announced (on Christmas Day itself), that my beloved perfume was no longer available...it had been discontinued!

Since then I have been wearing 'Cinéma' (above) (Yves Saint Laurent).
It is a far more 'heady' scent, very expensive smelling, although its affordably priced.
Its not really a daytime fragrance., but then I haven't heard anyone round Sainsburys complaining just yet!!

           "Perfectly pink"

Unlike 'Ma Larkin' who likes a Champage Cocktail "as a sort of pipe opener" some mornings, I prefer Prosecco or Cava.

Of course I don't drink it in the morning
like Ma, that is except for Christmas morning,

I sometimes to buy a bottle on a Friday night,
to accompany my anchovy stuffed olives,
handcooked crisps, and filo wrapped prawns with sweet chilli sauce... a little decadence on
a Friday night is absolutely de rigueur!!

Afternoon Tea

If you've left it a little late to book a table for a special 'Mothers Day Afternoon Tea',
then why not surprise your Mum by preparing
a tea at home.

Lay up your table with a pretty cloth, some lovely china and provide sandwiches, warm scones, pretty cakes and of course lots of tea.
As it is a special ocassion a glass of something sparkling ( see above) would also be a nice touch.

If you don't fancy the idea of making the sandwiches yourself, then why not order a 'Sandwich platter' from either:
