Being the second oldest of seven children meant there was always a new baby around. It would be wrapped up snugly in a blanket in some corner of the room. I could never quite see it's face while it lay there sleeping soundly, just the very top of its cute little head.

When my youngest brother was about 3 years old, he got up in the middle of the night, went down to the kitchen and opened the oven where Mum used to keep the chip pan full of lard.

He sat there happily playing with the fat, smothering it all over himself and the kitchen floor. When he was through with his midnight massage, he went back upstairs and got into bed with Mum and Dad. Now that's what you call doing the mess around!

Ok, so maybe he was getting ready to swim the Channel or preparing for some other act of physical or mental endurance.
